Information for Members of the Public

The information within this section of the website is intended for members of the general public in the UK. Within this section you will find information about von Willebrand disease, which affects the ability of blood to clot.

What is von Willebrand disease?

Von Willebrand disease is a condition present from birth which affects the ability of the blood to clot. It is caused by a dysfunctional, or low levels of a protein called von Willebrand factor (VWF). It can affect both men and women equally.

Von Willebrand disease has 3 different types; type I, II and III with type III being the most severe.

Having von Willebrand disease means you are more likely to bleed from an injury, but bleeding can also happen for no apparent reason such as nose bleeds or into joints such as the ankle, wrist or elbow.

Sufferers are also more likely to bleed excessively following surgery or if having a tooth taken out.

For women with von Willebrand disease, it can cause excessive bleeding during monthly periods or following childbirth.

There is no cure for von Willebrand disease, but with the right care people with von Willebrand disease can lead full and active lives.

Further information and support can be found via The Haemophilia Society, a UK-wide charity for all those affected by bleeding disorders.
